The forge is a work station used to heat metals to high temperatures, which can then be transferred to an anvil for smithing.
Creation
A forge can be crafted with 7 cobblestone of any type.

Operation
- Add a high-temperature fuel to the forge by pressing Shift +
. 1 piece of fuel will suffice for smithing 1 or 2 items. The forge can hold up to 5 pieces of fuel, and their duration will stack.
- Add items to the forge by pressing Shift +
. The forge can hold up to 4 metal ingots, 1 iron bloom, or 1 work item.
- Hold Shift +
with a torch to ignite the fuel.
- Wait for the item to heat up above 50% of its melting point to become workable. The temperature is displayed in the Block Info HUD.
- (Optional) Press
on attached bellows to send more air into the forge. This will cause the fuel to combust faster and reach a higher temperature.
- While holding tongs in the off-hand, press
to remove the item and place it on an anvil to begin smithing.
After the forge has been lit, it will continue to burn until all of the fuel is consumed. More fuel can be added at any time. Items can be returned to the forge to reheat them to a workable temperature. Rain will extinguish the forge.
Note that metals inside a forge do not melt, even when heated above their melting point.
Bellows
Fuel in a forge has different properties from those stated in the tooltip (which apply to firepits instead). Without the use of bellows, fuel will only reach 60% of its maximum temperature.
| Icon | Fuel | Temperature (°C) | Duration (game hours) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Without bellows | With bellows | |||
| Brown coal | 600 | 985 | 2.4 | |
| Black coal | 700 | 1150 | 3 | |
| Anthracite | 700 | 1150 | 4 | |
| Charcoal | 750 | 1232 | 2 | |
| Coke | 800 | 1314 | 2 | |
| Contaminated coal* | 500 | 821 | 1.4 | |
* As of 1.22.2, contaminated coal cannot be placed in a forge, despite having forge fuel properties. This is likely to be a bug.[1]
Without bellows, fuel will only reach 60% of its maximum temperature. Note that metals must be heated to above 50% of their melting point to become workable.
- Metals that are workable at relatively low temperatures, such as copper (542°C) and bronze (425-510°C), do not require bellows.
- Iron (741°C) does not strictly require bellows if charcoal or coke is used, but its workable temperature can only be maintained for about 1 minute before it needs to be reheated.
- Steel (751°C) does not strictly require bellows if coke is used, but its workable temperature can only be maintained for about 1 minute before it needs to be reheated.
- Blister steel (801°C) requires bellows.
Notes
- There exists a third type of bellows, the large bellows, that is designed to operate with mechanical power and has the highest crafting material cost. However, the relevant mechanical systems were not completed in time for the release of Version 1.22.0.
History
- Bellows were teased 31 Oct 2025 in the devlog channel of the Discord server: "more forgey forge".[2]
- They were introduced in game version 1.22[3] along with a new forge model.
