Coral is a sedentary marine creature that tends to form reefs in temperate, warm and tropical seas.

Generation

Coral blocks and their variants generate as parts of coral reefs , found mostly around ocean coastlines in temperate and tropical climates.

The climate in a given area determines which types of coral reefs can generate there and therefore which colours of coral can be found there as most reefs only generate with certain colours of coral.

Further details on climates the different colours can be found in are listed in the table below and refer to Coral reef, Coral structure and Coral ledges only. The minimum and maximum temperatures refer to the yearly average temperature in that area.

Harvesting

Coral reef blocks and structures can be mined with a pickaxe dropping chunks of coral of the same colour as the block.

Unlike rocks , whole coral reef blocks cannot be obtained through relieving .

Most of the decorative coral blocks can be obtained by breaking them with your hands (though this can be sped up with a knife or pickaxe, depending on the particular coral type) resulting in the coral block being dropped.

Types

The various types of coral with their respective basic, coral ledge and coral structure blocks. Coral ledges only exist for blue, red and tan coral.

There are six main colours of reef blocks and coral structures that will generate in various coral reefs: blue, brown, green, red, tan and yellow. Some additional variants of coral are missing some of these colours or include additional ones - green is often excluded while pink or purple is often included instead.

Neither the basic coral reef blocks nor the coral structure blocks can be obtained in survival. The coral ledges can be mined with a pickaxe to obtain them however when placed, they will always place with the back of the ledge facing north making them somewhat impractical for building.

There are also many additional coral variants which will drop themselves and can be used for decoration. The additional coral types obtainable in survival mode are Brain coral, Branched coral, Shelf coral, Fan coral, Dense fan coral and Tube coral.

* The yellow dense fan corals are named fan coral in-game however this is likely a bug.

Uses

The chunks of coral obtained from breaking coral reef blocks and structures can be used to craft coral cobblestone, coral fences and the coral bracelet.

Colored chunks of coral stay fresh for 24 hours after which they turn into Chunk of coral (dead) however all recipes involving chunks of coral can use the dead variant in place of any of the coloured ones so this doesn't cause any practical problems.

All of the decorative corals are perishable and any coloured variant will turn into the respective dead variant after 3 days, except the shelf coral which will die after 1 day. Corals do not perish while they are in water - neither saltwater nor freshwater. The player to extend their lifetime indefinitely by placing them in water and breaking them again which will reset the perish timer.
