Chromium is a metal found in chromite ore. Chromite is used in the production of sturdy leather and dyeing .

Obtaining

Chromite ore can be found in most igneous rock types: andesite, basalt, granite, peridotite, and kimberlite. It is a deep ore , meaning it does not have shallow deposits or loose stones on the surface.

Chromite deposits generate at an elevation between 0 and 0.4 of sea level . In a world with default height settings, this ranges from Y = 0 to Y = 44. The deposit is disc-shaped with a radius of 5 to 15 blocks. Chromite has 3 tries per chunk to generate, making it very rare.[1]

A Tier 5 pickaxe (steel ) or an ore blasting bomb is required to mine chromite ore.

Processing

Pulverizing

Chromite nuggets can be turned into crushed chromite in a pulverizer equipped with Tier 4 pounder caps (steel). 1 chromite nugget has a 30% chance to turn into 1 crushed chromite. On average, every 10 chromite nuggets will yield 3 crushed chromite.

Casting

Chromium has a melting point of 1907°C. While chromite can technically be cast into ingot molds , there are currently no fuels that reach the necessary temperature. Chromium ingots and chromium bits are therefore unobtainable in normal gameplay.

Usage

Sturdy leather

2 pieces of crushed chromite and 2L of sulfuric acid can be heated in a cooking pot to make 1L of chromium sulfate . 3L of chromium sulfate can be used to treat 1 large or huge hide in the production of sturdy leather , a crafting material for the highest tier of bags .

Dyeing

1 piece of crushed chromite and 5L of water can be combined in a barrel to make 5L of diluted chromite. Mordanted cloth is created by sealing 2L of diluted chromite and 1 plain cloth in a barrel for 8 hours. Diluted cassiterite and diluted alum can also be used. Once complete, mordanted cloth can be treated with any color of dye .

History

Version Description
1.10.1 rc.1 Chromite ore generation was changed to deep underground only.
1.12.5 The size of chromite ore deposits was reduced.
1.17.0 rc.1 The crafting recipe for dyes was changed from diluted chromite to water. The amount of diluted chromite used for mordanted cloth was reduced and standardized along with alum and cassiterite.
1.18.0 pre.1 A new texture for diluted chromite, along with diluted alum and cassiterite, was added. Crushed chromite was added.
