Tin is a metal obtained from cassiterite. it is primarily used as an alloy component in tin bronze and solder.
Obtaining
Ores
Cassiterite can be found in all igneous and metamorphic rock types: andesite, granite, basalt, peridotite, phyllite, and slate. Cassiterite deposits generates in a specific range of Y-levels that are relative to the surface.[1] The height of the surface varies across different terrain, and is estimated to be Y-level 120 on average in a world with default height settings.
The characteristics of each type of cassiterite deposit are as follows:
| Deposit type | Surface bits | Relative Y-level | Y-level of 120 | Radius | Thickness | Tries per chunk | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | |||||
| Shallow cassiterite | ✔️ | 0.92 | 0.98 | 110 | 118 | 2-4 | 1 | 0.007 |
| Deep cassiterite | ❌ | 0.4 | 0.75 | 48 | 90 | 2-8 | 1 | 7 |
| Deep cassiterite (massive) | ❌ | 0 | 0.6 | 0 | 72 | 9-15 | 1 | 0.1 |
Deep cassiterite deposits are uncommon. Massive deep cassiterite deposits are very rare. Shallow cassiterite deposits, which are the easiest to spot and mine, are extremely rare.

A tier 2 pickaxe (copper or higher) or an ore blasting bomb is required to mine cassiterite.
Trading
5 cassiterite nuggets can be purchased from a commodities trader for 1 to 3 rusty gears. While in stock, this trade can be performed 4 to 8 times per reset.
Looting
There is a 0.02% chance (1 in 5000) of obtaining 1 cassiterite nugget when panning in sand or gravel.
Cracked vessels (ore) found in ruins have a 2.17% chance to drop 4-12 cassiterite nuggets.
Usage
Casting
- See also: Casting
Cassiterite can be smelted in a crucible at 232°C. Molten tin can only be poured into an ingot mold. Tin ingots primarily serve as a means of storage.
Smithing
- See also: Smithing
Tin ingots can only be smithed into tin plates; when placed on an anvil, no dialog box to select an item will appear. Tin requires a tier 3 anvil (iron or higher) and has a workable temperature of 116°C. Tin plates are exclusively used to craft riveted tin blocks.
Dyeing
Cassiterite nuggets and chunks can be crushed in a pulverizer equipped with tier 2 pounder caps (bronze or higher). A cassiterite nugget has a yield of 0.33. On average, every 3 cassiterite nuggets will yield 1 crushed cassiterite.
1 crushed cassiterite and 5 liters of water can be combined in a barrel to produce 5 liters of diluted cassiterite: a liquid used to prepare cloth before it can be treated with dyes.
Alloys
Tin and other metal bits can be smelted together in a crucible in a specific ratio to create alloys.
| Image | Name | Tin % | Other metal % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tin bronze | 8-12% | Copper: 88-92% | |
| Lead solder | 45-55% | Lead: 25-35% | |
| Silver solder | 50-60% | Silver: 25-35% |
History
