Runtime spawn conditions

  • Bowtorns can appear in any region of the world, including certain special story event locations.[1]
  • Bowtorns spawn in grass, loose stones, or air.[2] It appears that they cannot spawn in deep snow.
  • Bowtorns should not spawn in areas of daylight higher than level 7.[3]
  • The chance for a bowtorn to spawn is 0.1[4] (compared to 0.00003 for bears).
  • The average group size is 1, with a maximum of 1 (per chunk?) for surface, deep, tainted, corrupt, and nightmare bowtorns.[5]
  • Surface bowtorns can spawn between 0.85 (85% of sea level) and 2 (world height limit); deep bowtorns between 0.22 and 0.89 (22%-89% of sea level); tainted bowtorns between 0.1 and 0.55; corrupt bowtorns between 0 and 0.35; nightmare bowtorns between 0 and 0.23[6]
  • Presumably gearfoot bowtorns only spawn during temporal storms.

Despawn conditions

Bowtorns might despawn if at least 32 blocks away from the player for 30 seconds, or at least 64 blocks away from the player for 6 seconds.[7]

Variants

There are 6 types of bowtorn: surface, deep, tainted, corrupt, nightmare, gearfoot.

Behavior

  • Bowtorns can climb.[8] Because they lack the attribute canClimbAnywhere, it's assumed that they cannot cling to ceilings and fences.
  • reckless: true[9]
  • spawnCloserDuringLowStability: true[10]
  • stepHeight: 1.1251[11]
  • preferredLightLevel: 15[12]
  • In addition to standard animations (idle, wander, walk, run, swim, hurt, die), bowtorns exhibit some intriguing behaviors[13]:
    • turret
    • load
    • hold
    • unload
    • reload
    • stab
  • The movespeed while wandering is 0.012.[14]
  • The movespeed in water is 0.015 in water.[15]
  • idleSoundRange: 14[16]

Combat

  • Some bowtorns' melee attack (stab) deals slashing damage[17]: corrupt bowtorns, nightmare bowtorns, and gearfoot bowtorns.
  • After a bowtorn's melee attack (stab) is a cooldown period of 500-1750 milliseconds.[18]
  • If a bowtorn's health gets below 30%, it might turn and flee the player for 10 seconds. [19]
  • If a bowtorn senses a player within 30 blocks, it might activate its turret attack. Its maximum range for firing is 29 blocks. Its minimum range is 14 blocks. If you get closer than 14 blocks, the loaded arrow will be aborted.[20]
  • If a fleeing bowtorn gets further than 9 blocks from its attacker, it might stop running. If the player approaches within 9 blocks, it should resume running away.[21]
  • The minDayLight for surface bowtorns is 0.925, while for deep bowtorns it's 0.97; for all other variants, it's 2.[22] Presumably this means that surface bowtorns flee even faint sunlight, while tier 2 bowtorns (and higher) can withstand sunlight up to level 2.
  • If a bowtorn fleeing the sunlight receives damage, it might stop fleeing and engage in different behavior.[23]
  • The movespeed when fleeing the player is 0.03.
  • The movespeed when seeking the player is 0.05.

Harvesting

  • "harvestable", duration: 2[24]
  • Gearfoot bowtorns have the highest chance of dropping a temporal gear: 1 ± 0.4. Rusty gears: 5 ± 2.5. Flax fibers: 2. Jonas part (any): 0.4.[25]

Prey

  • Apparently the only thing bowtorns are interested in is the player(s).

History

  • Bowtorns were introduced with version 1.20.

Notes

  • Killing a bowtorn restores temporal stability to the player,[26] with higher tiers restoring higher amounts: surface bowtorn: 0.01, deep bowtorn: 0.015, tainted bowtorn: 0.02, corrupt bowtorn: 0.025, nightmare bowtorn: 0.3, gearfoot bowtorn: 0.35.
  • Worldgen spawn conditions: Not applicable
  • These creatures cannot be fed, tamed or bred.

Bowtorns might once have been human. Tobias speaks of people who "turned" when disaster struck.
