Brick blocks are craftable building blocks. There are 3 categories: mudbrick, clay brick, and refractory brick.

Crafting

Mudbrick

There are 2 variants of mudbrick blocks: light and dark. These can be crafted using any combination of dry grass , clay , soil (low and medium fertility only), and sand . Mudbrick is fragile and has a 15% chance of being lost when broken.[1]

Mudbrick blocks have 2 shapes: full blocks and slabs (half blocks).

Clay brick

For specific brick colors and patterns, see Ceramic Blocks .

There are 9 variants of clay brick blocks: black, brown, clinker, cream, gray, orange, red, tan, and fireclay. Raw clay bricks are crafted using 1 of 3 types of clay : red clay, blue clay, and fire clay. When fired in a pit kiln or beehive kiln , the brick’s color will change depending on its exposure to the outside air. Finished clay bricks can be combined with mortar to make clay brick blocks.

Clay brick blocks have 4 shapes: full blocks, slabs, stairs, and chimneys.

Fireclay brick
See also: Fireclay brick

Fireclay bricks are 1 of the 9 variants of clay bricks. Fireclay bricks lack a corresponding chimney, which is replaced by the bloomery . Fireclay bricks can also be crafted into gratings for use in a beehive kiln , and have a heat resistance of 50% (1 in 2 chance to break).

Refractory brick

See also: Refractory brick

Refractory brick blocks are used for building a cementation furnace and beehive kiln . There are 3 tiers of refractory bricks with progressively higher heat resistance, which reduce the probability of being damaged in a damage calculation.

  • Tier 1: 90% heat resistance (1 in 10 chance to break)
  • Tier 2: 95% heat resistance (1 in 20 chance to break)
  • Tier 3: 99.9% heat resistance (1 in 1000 chance to break)

Unfired refractory bricks are crafted using fireclay , crushed quartz , crushed bauxite , crushed olivine (optional for tiers 2 and 3), and crushed ilmenite (optional for tier 3). A pulverizer with bronze pounder caps or a higher tier metal is required to crush these minerals. After firing in a pit kiln or beehive kiln , refractory bricks can be combined with mortar to make refractory brick blocks.

Refractory brick blocks have 2 shapes: full blocks and gratings.

Natural generation

Buried treasure chests found near the surface may contain red brick slabs, brown brick slabs, or fireclay brick blocks as loot.[2]

Chests in ruins may contain fireclay brick blocks as loot.[3] Underground ruins, specifically kitchens, may have a small amount of tier 1 refractory brick blocks or aged irregular brown brick blocks in the fireplace.[4][5]

Purchasing

8 single clay bricks (red, brown, and fireclay) can be purchased from the building materials trader for 1 to 3 rusty gears . While in stock, this trade can be performed 6 to 10 times per reset.

Usage

Building

Mudbrick and clay brick blocks are solid, non-flammable blocks that can be used in player-built structures. Slabs can be placed horizontally or vertically. Chimney blocks will emit smoke and ember particles when placed above a firepit .

Fireclay brick blocks or refractory brick blocks can be used to build a beehive kiln , which is used to fire raw clay items . Refractory brick blocks are required to build a cementation furnace , which is used for steel making .

1.0.2 Brick block textures were improved.
1.4.6 Clay brick chimneys were added.
1.5.2 Clay brick slabs and stairs were added. Uncraftable light and dark mudbricks were added, available only in Creative. The output of the clay brick block crafting recipe was doubled.
1.8.0 rc.1 Crafting recipes for stone bricks were added.
1.9.0 rc.1 Brick blocks, slabs, and stairs for the new rock types were added. The graphics of bricks were improved.
1.10.0 rc.1 Mortar was introduced as a crafting ingredient for brick blocks.
1.10.8 Crafting recipes for mudbrick and mudbrick slabs were added.
1.12.0 The firing temperature for raw bricks was decreased from 1100°C to 800°C.
1.14.0 rc.1 Refractory bricks, blocks, and gratings were introduced.
rc.5 In the tier 2 and tier 3 refractory brick crafting recipe, crushed peridotite was changed to crushed olivine.
1.15.0 rc.1 The block breaking time for refractory bricks was increased, and a mining bonus for ceramic materials was added to pickaxes. The crafting recipe for mudbricks now accepts medium fertility soil.
1.16.5 rc.1 The drops from damaged refractory brick blocks were adjusted to be less than the replacement amount.
1.18.0 pre.1 Aged brick blocks were added.
1.19.0 pre.1 Stone bricks were renamed to ashlar blocks.
1.20.0 pre.1 The beehive kiln was introduced. Fired brick colors, patterns, and offset variants were added. 4 sets of ruin-exclusive bricks were added. Refractory brick gratings are now subject to damage from the cementation furnace, and have an alternative damaged model, in addition to the cracked texture overlay.
rc.1 Uneven style bricks for running, header, and soldier bonds were added. Added smoke particles to chimneys when there is a firepit or pit kiln burning below. Rough clinker brick blocks were added.
1.22.0 pre.1 Light mudbrick slabs were added.

Notes

  • 2 uncraftable variants of clay brick blocks are available in the Creative inventory: uneven bricks and aged irregular bricks.
