Berries are the fruit of berry bushes, also known as fruiting bushes[1], found in all biomes except the desert. Berries are fresh for a short period of time and provide fruit satiety when consumed.
Obtaining
Mature berry bushes grow in the wild. Different groups of berry species can be found in the temperate, tropical, and subpolar climates[2].
Ripe fruit can be harvested with
. Wild bushes require no maintenance and will continuously grow new fruit under the correct temperature conditions. Blueberries and cranberries are also sold by the agricultural trader[3].
Usage
- Berries, like most other fruits, provide 80 fruit satiety. They can be used as a cooking ingredient to create meals such as porridge, meat stew, jam, and pie. They can also be pressed in a fruitpress to produce juice, which can be fermented into wine and brandy through the process of alcohol brewing.
- Cranberries have a lower satiety of 60 but remain fresh for twice as long, making them a more hardy food source for raw consumption.
- The availability of berries in large quantities compared to other perishable items makes them suitable for intentionally spoiling into rot to create compost.
- Some berries are used to make dyes. Blueberries and blackcurrents can be turned into purple dye, and cranberries can be turned into pink dye.
Growing Berry Bushes
Collecting berry bush cuttings
Cuttings are used to create new berry bushes and can be acquired by holding Shift and
on a berry bush with a knife. Only 1 cutting can be taken per year and does not impact the bush. Breaking a bush by any other means drops plant debris, which can only be used as a simple fuel or allowed to spoil into rot. Cuttings are fresh for 15 days and will perish into sticks.
Strawberry cuttings are specifically referred to as runners.
Growth states

Cuttings can be planted on any type of soil (not farmland). A cutting takes 18–36 days to grow into a young bush and 18–36 more days to grow into a mature bush, or a total of 4–8 months[4].
Mature bushes cycle through four growth stages: mature (empty), flowering, ripening, and ripe. A newly matured or harvested bush takes 8–10 days to begin flowering, then 3–5 days to bear fruit, then 8–10 days to ripen for harvest. If the ripe fruit is left unharvested after 8–10 days, the bush will automatically revert to being empty.
A cutting can be broken with any tool and replanted, which resets its randomized growth time.
Health states
Berry bushes have 4 health states: bountiful, healthy, struggling, and barren. Healthier bushes have greater berry yields and more visible flowers and fruit.
| Berry | Berry yield | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bountiful | Healthy | Struggling | Barren | |
| Beautyberry | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Blueberry | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Cloudberry | 3–5 | 2–3 | 1–2 | 0 |
| Cranberry | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Blackberry | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Blackcurrant | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Raspberry | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Redcurrant | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Whitecurrant | 8–9 | 5–6 | 2–3 | 0 |
| Strawberry | 3–5 | 2–3 | 1–2 | 0 |
When a cutting grows into a young bush, it starts with nutrients equivalent to its soil’s base nutrient levels (25% N/P/K from low-fertility soil, 50% N/P/K from medium-fertility soil, etc). Its health can then be improved by applying fertilizer directly to the bush. Bushes can use multiple types of fertilizer and can accumulate a maximum of 100% in each nutrient, which follow the same slow release mechanics as farmland. Soil has no other effect on bush growth, and does not impart additional nutrients through passive replenishment like farmland.
| Health state | Total amount of nutrients | Average N/P/K |
|---|---|---|
| Bountiful | 240%–300% | 80%–100% |
| Healthy | 90%–239.9% | 30%–79.9% |
| Struggling | 30%–89.9% | 10%–29.9% |
| Barren | 0–29.9% | 0%–9.9% |
Each time a bush produces a ripe harvest, it will deplete some of its current nutrients. When the total amount of nutrients falls below a certain threshold, its health state will decline. Bushes’ nutrient consumption decreases as they age by about 15% per year, reaching about 5% nutrient consumption after 20 years[5].

Cloudberries and strawberries have half the yield quantity of other species[6] and consume nutrients at half the normal rate[7]. Strawberries also generate in patches double the size[8].
Wild bushes are only found in the healthy or struggling state, and their health state cannot be changed nor can nutrients be added.
Special traits
Wild berry bushes have a 15% chance to generate with a positive or negative trait from the same category. Traits have a 60% chance of being negative and a 40% chance of being positive. Bushes can have a maximum of 4 traits, with 1 from each category[9].
Traits are permanent and passed on to the bush's cuttings. Cuttings with different traits do not stack in the inventory.
| Trait | Effect |
|---|---|
| Heavy bearer | +15% yield |
| Shy bearer | -15% yield |
| Thick-skinned fruit | +35% ripe duration |
| Thin-skinned fruit | -35% ripe duration |
| Strong rooted | -30% nutrient uptake |
| Weak rooted | +30% nutrient uptake |
| Densely clustered berries | +30% harvest speed |
| Sparsely clustered berries | -30% harvest speed |
Temperature ranges

Berry bushes will grow and produce fruit when the temperature is between 4°C to 30°C[10]. When temperature rises and falls beyond this range, they will slow or reset:
- Below 4°C, bushes' growth will pause.
- Below -3°C, mature bushes will revert to an empty state.
- Above 30°C, bushes' growth will pause.
- Above 38°C, mature bushes will revert to an empty state.
At very cold temperatures, mature berry bushes will enter dormancy: losing their leaves, reverting to an empty state, and pausing growth. The bush needs to experience a significantly warmer temperature to exit dormancy.
| Berry | Temperature (°C) | |
|---|---|---|
| Enter dormancy | Exit dormancy | |
| Beautyberry | -5 | 15 |
| Blueberry | -5 | 15 |
| Cloudberry | -5 | 15 |
| Cranberry | -5 | 15 |
| Blackberry | -5 | 15 |
| Blackcurrant | -2 | 12 |
| Raspberry | -5 | 15 |
| Redcurrant | -2 | 12 |
| Whitecurrant | -2 | 12 |
| Strawberry | -5 | 15 |
Berry bushes can be planted in a greenhouse and will receive the +5°C bonus to its detected temperature, affecting all growth thresholds accordingly (growth pause, growth reset, entering and leaving dormancy, etc).
Notes
- Growth times are given based on the default 9-day month and scale with changes to month length.
- Blackberry and raspberry bushes reduce the player’s walk speed.
- Raccoons and sun bears will approach ripe berry bushes to pick and eat them.
- The berry bushes from before the overhaul in Version 1.22 are regarded as legacy blocks: they are not available in the Creative inventory, but any remaining in existing worlds will still function.
