An anvil is a functional block used as a work surface for smithing items made of metal.
Creation
Anvils are created through either casting or smithing, depending on the metal's tier.

Casting

Anvils made of copper and bronze, which have a low melting point, are cast in an anvil mold.
- Create an anvil mold through clay forming, and fire it in a pit kiln or beehive kiln.
- Smelt 900 units of metal (equivalent to 9 ingots) in a crucible using a high-temperature fuel.
- Pour the molten metal into the anvil mold until it is full.
- After it has cooled, break the anvil mold to retrieve the anvil.
Smithing

Anvils made of iron, meteoric iron, and steel, which have a high melting point, are created by welding two parts: the anvil base and anvil top. Smithing these parts is a lengthy process and can be performed on an anvil made of a metal that is 1 tier lower. For example, iron (a tier 4 metal) can be smithed on an anvil made of bronze (a tier 3 metal).
Altogether, creating an anvil using this method requires 10 ingots and 1 piece of powdered borax for flux.
Anvil base
- Gather 5 ingots and heat them in a forge.
- To begin smithing, add a maximum of 3 ingots to an anvil at once. The first ingot can optionally be replaced with a plate to complete the lowest layer faster.
- Begin shaping the anvil base with a hammer.
Note that work items have a maximum height of 6 voxels. Newly added ingots and plates are placed near the center, on top of the highest voxel below it. Therefore, if a work item's height is too high, adding another ingot may exclude the upper part of the ingot that cannot fit into the work item, resulting in wasted voxels. To prevent this, add ingots one at a time and ensure that the work item's height does not exceed 4 voxels in that area (i.e. there are 2 voxels of clearance) by distributing the recently added voxels first.
An ingot adds 42 voxels in a 7x2x3 shape. A plate adds 81 voxels in a 9x1x9 shape.
- When ready, add the next ingot. Prioritize moving voxels to complete the lower layers first.
A finished anvil base has 192 voxels, meaning that there is a margin of error of 14 voxels (e.g. accidentally splitting voxels).
Anvil top
The process of smithing the anvil top is the same as the anvil base.
A finished anvil top has 210 voxels, meaning that there is no margin for error. Any wasted voxels will require a sixth ingot to finish the work item. Replacing the first ingot with a plate will also require a sixth ingot, because 1 plate has 1 fewer voxel than 2 ingots combined.
Welding
- Heat the anvil base and anvil top in a forge to 800°C or higher.[1]
- Place the anvil base on a solid surface.
- Apply 1 piece of powdered borax by pressing Shift +
. - Place the anvil top.
- Hammer the two halves together by pressing
12 times,[2] until they have been fused into an anvil.
Usage
In smithing, metals ingots are heated in a forge and then transferred to an anvil by pressing Shift +
. When an ingot is placed on an anvil, a dialog box will open and allow the player to select the item to be crafted. Ingots can also be substituted with plates.
An anvil can be used to work the corresponding metal's tier and 1 tier higher, along with all of the tiers below. The only exception is meteoric iron, which requires an iron anvil to work rather than a bronze anvil. Untiered metals have various anvil tier requirements, as shown in the table below.
Note that the tier system for anvils begins with copper, unlike the tier system for tools and weapons, because anvils cannot be created in the Stone Age.

Note that the tier of the hammer or helve hammer used has no bearing on which metals can be smithed.
Recycling
An anvil can be combined with a chisel in the crafting grid to recover 8 ingots of the respective metal. This consumes an amount of chisel's durability equal to the durability of a new chisel of the same tier as the anvil.
For example, a copper anvil can be recycled into 8 copper ingots using a copper chisel with 600/600 durability, or an iron chisel with at least 600/2000 durability.
