Dye is a liquid in Vintage Story that can be used to change the color of cloth and leather.

Creation

Mordant

Note: This section does not apply to leather. Colored leather does not need any mordant. This section is about fabric.

To fix the colors, the fabric must first be treated with a mordant.

There are 3 mordants in the game: Diluted cassiterite, Diluted chromite and Diluted alum (they have the same properties).

A mordant solution is made instantly in a barrel by adding 1 Crushed cassiterite or 1 Crushed chromite or 1 Crushed alum to 5 L of water.

You can get these crushed materials by using a pulverizer . You can put the water in the barrel with a wooden bucket .

5L Water + Crushed cassiterite = 5L Diluted cassiterite

5L Water + Crushed chromite = 5L Diluted chromite

5L Water + Crushed alum = 5L Diluted alum

Then, you place a plain cloth in the barrel to soak in the mordant and you seal the barrel for 8 hours. You need 2 L of mordant for 1 plain cloth. You end up with 1 Mordanted cloth.

2L Diluted cassiterite or 2L Diluted chromite or 2L Diluted alum + Cloth = Mordanted cloth

Color

Dyes are created in a barrel. All dyes require a specific element that determines the color of the dye. Some dyes can be obtained in several ways. The barrel needs to be sealed for 8 hours for the dye to be ready (except for the brown dye which requires 24 hours).

Usage

To dye some leather or some mordanted cloth, you place it in the barrel containing the dye to soak it and seal the barrel for 8 hours.

  • 4L Dye + 1x Leather = 1x Colored leather
  • 2L Dye + 1x Mordanted cloth = 1x Dyed cloth

Dyed cloth is needed to create specific types of clothing . Colored leather is used to make ornate versions of shields .
